DIY Baby Gift #2

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Here's another great homemade baby gift idea: personalized onesies.  T-shirts with messages are such a hot item right now.  Why not for brand new babies too?

I needed a baby gift for the daughter of one of my oldest and dearest friends.  I decided to put the logos of two institutions that are important to the new little family on brand new, spanking white, Gerbers onesies.

I purchased a package of onesies at Target.  I hand-washed them first so that the transfers would stick properly to the fabric.

While the onesies were drying, I went on Google Images to find the logos I needed.  One logo represented the university where the parents met, Westmont College.  The other logo is where the new dad works, Blizzard Entertainment.  I printed the logos from my home printer on to a piece of specialty paper, Stretchable Fabric Transfers, by Avery.  I purchased a package of this paper at Office Depot.
The instructions on the package are self explanatory and easy to follow.  You simply print the picture you want to transfer on to the paper making sure to "flip" or "reverse" the image before printing.  Cut the excess paper from around the picture and place it on the fabric. The instructions tell you how long to iron the transfer, depending on the size of your picture. Carefully pull off the paper backing from the image. And Wa-La.  You have an adorable, personalized baby onesie.

Half the fun is picking out a design that is meaningful to the family. A favorite location, a sports team, a family heirloom.  Whatever bonds the family together.
