A Patriotic Pause

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

It is that time of year again when we Americans have the profound PRIVILEGE to show our gratitude to be living in the greatest country in the history of the world.  I understand that the country isn't perfect; that many of the founding fathers' original philosophies have been compromised and that we are currently facing our biggest challenges as a country. But in spite of all the differing opinions, the fact still remains: WE ARE ALL AMERICANS.  Our common bond of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness plus our patriotic heritage unites us in a unique and special way unknown to the rest of the world. I am proud to be an American, to live in this land hallowed by God, and to have the opportunities that only a free society can provide.  While I openly take advantage of all our society has to offer each and every day, I'll be the first to admit that I don't spend nearly as much time as I should in gratitude for this great nation.  Thank heaven for occasions such as the Fourth of July, a day whose sole purpose is dedicated  to the remembrance of all this country stands for, to remind each citizen of the blessings and sacrifices that have brought us together as a nation.
One thing that causes my emotion to stir for this great land, is to hear and sing the beautiful patriotic anthem, America the Beautiful, written by Katherine Lee Bates with music by Samuel A. Ward.  I have loved this song ever since my seventh grade music appreciation class at Walter Reed Junior High when my teacher, Mr. Kennedy, vividly explained every detailed meaning of every phrase.  I always get emotional when I hear this song.
 America The Beautiful

Oh, beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain
For purple mountains majesties Above the fruited plains
America! America! God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.

Oh, beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thy every flaw,
Confirm they soul in self control, Thy liberty in law.

Oh, beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife
Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness , And every gain divine.

Oh, beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.

I have a great fear for our future: Are we as a people too caught up in fireworks and barbecues, parades and festivals, that we don't give the appropriate attention required to pause, reflect and give genuine thanks for The United States of America?  We cannot afford to take for granted our patriotism, our loyalty, our love for our country.  For if we do, we will surely lose all that makes America special and unique.

What are you doing to remember the greatness of America?
