Finally, summer is in full swing here in Southern California. The thermometer outside says 104 degrees and plans to stay there a full week -- our first long term venture in to triple digits this season. Besides super hot temps, what else says summer to you? Long days? Family vacations? An abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables? Pretty toes? A particular color?
What is the color of summer? Is it orange, the color of cantaloupe, summer sunsets, and nail polish?
Lyndsey Payzant Wells
Or is it yellow, the shade of the hot sun, corn on the cob,and lemonade?
What about black? Yes black. Black flip flops, black sunglasses, or that little black dress for summer date nights?
For me, the color of summer would definitely have to be white. Were you taught like I was growing up that white was intended to be used only after Memorial Day and before Labor Day? That old rule from my grandmother and mother's time definitely set an expectation in my head that white is the one and only true color saved for summer. I love how everything looks great with white. Bright accents, muted tones, neon, patriotic, and especially white's polar opposite: black. White is the color of a gentle summer breeze, strappy sandals, suntan lotion, and floppy hats. Cool, crisp, clean, pure and fresh white.
Recently, when I attended evo'12, representatives from Procter and Gamble sat me down in their suite and asked me what I thought about white. (Lucky for me, I was actually wearing white that day).
Tim Williams/P&GI have to admit, I hadn't given it much thought before. I guess I have always just taken white for granted as that delectable, empty canvas waiting for summer to spill over it (figuratively and literally as in mustard out of a hot dog). As I contemplated how to quickly respond to their questions, a flood of summer memories as well as an appreciation for cleanliness came rushing in to thoughts. It made me smile inside and out. When I was done filming my little segment, I actually thanked the reps for giving me the opportunity to ponder on white, the color of my glorious summers.
Have you ever thought of summer as a color? Do you think white is only for summer? What color would you choose to represent everything summer?
